coil springs

Post by skippy »

I am getting disc brakes off a 76 f-150 and already have new coil springs for my 72 F-100 stepside. Are these the right springs after the brake swap? Thanks for your time

im pretty sure the coils will be fine, because they have nothing do do with the brakes. :?

The only time you might run into problems with coil springs is if you try to use '67-'72 coils with the '73-'79 radius arms. The small end of the coil spring (the bottom) is smaller (tighter curl) on the later springs. This means it won't fit the earlier lower spring pocket. To use the earlier springs with the later front end, you can either just use the early radius arms (which the spring pocket is shaped for) or modify the early spring pocket to fit on the wider '73-'79 radius arms.

I know that might not have made a lot of sense....but if you need me to post some pics showing the differences, just let me know.

something else to think of which really doesnt matter a whole lot but what engine does each truck have in it. if one oif them had a 6cyl insted of a v8 the spings might not be as heavy duty as the others. if they both were v8's from the factory then all you have to watch out for is the lower spring pads like kieth said.

The spring height will be different from right side to left side to compensate for the offset of the engine. I believe the right side spring is slightly taller, since there is a bit more load on that side.

What Keith said. &

Personally I found the early truck ride real nice with the later year springs, also leaving the suspension as one big unit springs & all makes a quick simple swap. Ie the big nut for that spring can be a pain.

yup when i swap the 79 F350 brakes/arms/beams etc onto my 68 i'm gonna use the F350 springs (had a 460 in it and they look thicker and taller so maybe my truck will be level after... )

plus the drivers side spring on my 68 broke the top 1/2 coil...so i need to change em anyway...

good info to know about that bottom coil pocket...didnt know that, thanks...i love this site :D

Is that really the case as far as the drivers side spring a different height than the passenger side spring?
I bought new springs for my 71 several years back and did'nt pay any attention to which side they went in. I do have a bit of lean on my truck right now also

Yep, the passenger side spring is a little bit taller than the driver side. I got a good lesson in that when assembling my front end. I noticed that one was taller, and I figured it would have to go on the driver's side, to compensate for the weight of the driver, steering box, etc. However, once it was all together the truck had a noticeable lean to the right. So I had to disassemble everything and switch the two springs around, and now it sets level.

I just had new springs put in mine and the driver side actually had a sticker on it stating it was driver side only due to the height difference.
