King Pin Assembly
Allright.
Mine has been apart so I can’t depend on the way it came out to put it back together:

Shows a washer (3178) above the I-Beam no such washer on either side of mine and honestly no room for one.
The bearing (3123) goes under the I beam (thats how mine was) but only one side had any shims and they were so damaged I’m not sure where they came out from.
The new king pin kit has shims in it:

So how does it all go back?

IIRC...put the seals in the spindle, clean the recesses real good beforehand. Spread some oil on the rubber. Lube and start the kingpin from the bottom and slide it through the spindle just far enough to install the bearing, flat side down. Install the spindle on the I-beam and start the kingpin through the I-beam and up into the upper spindle boss just a little. Check clearance between the I-beam and the upper spindle boss. Slide the kingpin back out a little and shim until you have no more than .006" clearance, a little tighter is fine, .003-.006", shims go between the I-beam and the upper spindle boss, not on bottom side. Install the kingpin all the way and install the keeper pin loosely. Install the upper and lower grease caps and grease zerks. Install the nut on the keeper pin and torque to 25 ft/lbs (I think). Grease the kinpins until it just starts to squeeze out, wipe off excess. Install back in truck and put the whole weight on it. Grease again.

My '70 kit Moog 8524B came with seals and both my original drum spindles and my '74 disc brake spindles had recesses in the outer bores to fit them. Looks like a tiny axle seal, metal shell with a rubber wiper inside. I see older sets used felt washers and the kingpin had a head on it and other makes use o-rings but something's gotta keep the grease in.

OK, my apologies for being dense here...
My drum spindles do not appear to have any seals in them, my kingpin kit did come with seals, I assume these go in the bottom of the upper bores? (where the “washer” 3178 shows (so washer = seal))?
My bearings do not appear to be sealed so I guess I need to pack them...

Maybe I'm wrong about the drum spindles? If you look at the photo here, you can see the shallow counterbore in the top. It's small, just as big as the shell on the seal. https://www.fordification.com/tech/imag ... dle_08.jpg the seal sits right on top of the bushing when installed and only the rubber part touches the kingpin. Maybe it didn't start til '73 and since the kingpins are the same they include them in the kit regardless?

OK a bit more cleaning and one of my drum spindles does in fact have a seal.
If I have my orientation correct, this is the bottom of the upper bore which makes some sense as this is where the gap will tend be based upon how the weight is carried by the spindle and I beam...

Incidentally, it appears the 73/74 spindle is machined differently on the top of the lower boss than the later spindle in Keith’s photo.
