Alberta boy with a new toy

Post by Mercury100 »

[image]420[/image]]I’ve been looking for a project for a while and a truck came along I could not resist.
1968 Mercury M100 shortbox fleetside.
It’s been modified to the point that it’s not worth going back to stock.
Antenna moved. Box pockets filled. Fuel tank removed and cab hole filled.
High compression 351C and c6 with. 2500 stall converter.
Power steering added from a 78 with beams and front disc brakes.
No power brakes though. Not sure why.
Got it home and started to tinker to make it run smoother.
Head gasket blown between 7-8.
Take the head off. Gasket has been blown for quite a while.
It over heated the block and head between 7-8 enough to crack both the head and the block.
The deck and head must have been not flat to blow between the cylinders.
All the other cylinder have 150 - 140 psi compression
Everything else in the engine is like new.
Ripped down the engine and started the search for a good core. Found a rebuild able core.
It’s at the machine shop getting bored to match pistons and having one head built.
Picked up a 03 mercury marquis front suspension from the local pic a part.
Ready to start building[[image][/image]

From the land of the frigid, (20's F here this morning so it has to be very cold in Alberta?).
There are more than a dozen Merc owners here on the forum-good to see another one saved.
I'd found Merc sitting under a barn about 65 miles from me here, (doubtful there's another within a few hundred miles) but the owner's Son I spoke with, (the owner brought it down from Canada back in the 70's) will just let it set under the barn and rot away in memory of their Father. The tires were all flat on it and body starting to rust two years ago the last time I passed by it-shameful for such a rare bump. :(
