Here in Michigan the tax is a percentage of total price paid. Or at least the price written on the title. Some buyers and sellers will exchange the cash then write in a lot smaller amount than what actually was exchanged. Not saying I have ever done this but it does work.

Because this was so rampant is exactly why MA went to "book value" for taxing purposes. They aren't called "Taxachussets" for nothingLone Ranger wrote:Here in Michigan the tax is a percentage of total price paid. Or at least the price written on the title. No, Massachusetts went to "book value" for taxing used cars so the state could rip off citizens who must buy used cars for transportation (usually rotted out ones), over and over again.

Isn't it sickening how many times the state can make money when just one vehicle is bought and sold a bunch over it's entire lifetime?!

Thanks all for the advice.
Debating whether to register it as an antique.
No commercial plates. Lower fees.
Still no relief on the high sales tax tho.
Right now I'm working on straightening out a stuck valve. Mostly resolved at the moment. Pulled the tank, cleaned it and spray painted it black. Carb's been rebuilt and ready to be re-installed.
