NewBe: 70' F100 Stepside 360 3 on the tree

Post by chippers123 »

Hello all. I have a project truck that has been languishing for about four years now.
I got it running today without much effort, but its blowing a lot of light blue/white smoke. Any suggestions?

Blue smoke is oil, white "smoke" may be steam. Any indication that it's blown a head gasket maybe? Look for exhaust gas bubbling out of the radiator filler neck, oil that looks like thick mayo, etc. If not, it's probably the piston rings sticking.
Warm the engine up a little, pull the spark plugs and put Marvel Mystery Oil (MMO) or WD40 in each cylinder. A couple of tablespoons is plenty. Put the plugs back in (new ones if it needs it) and leave it to soak, and change your oil and filter if you haven't already. Give it a day or two and try it again with fresh gas. It'll smoke like crazy for a while until the cylinders clear. Sometimes really stubborn rings need to get hot to free up.
