Finally got one (68 250)

Post by catch22 »

Hello all! I finally pulled the trigger. I got a nice 68 250 with a few problems. It runs and drives fine except it overheats within a few minutes. I put in new thermostat, but no change. Should I assume the water pump? I'm definitely no mechanic. There will be a learning curve.

Welcome to the sanitorium from one of the crazies.

Pop your radiator cap when it's cold and start the truck and let it idle until warm. Feel the top and bottom hose as well as the heater hoses and watch for coolant movement through the radiator. Once you get flow through the radiator feel the face of it for even warmth. Uneven warmth means you have blockage.

Also post up some pics of the engine bay. Might be something obvious wrong that you just don't know about yet.

BTW, good looking meathead in the back. Looks English by the short nose and big head. I currently have a pair of American labs with the long noses.

Nice truck! Looks to have a 390 from the badges on the fenders.

:wel: from California! Nice looking truck. The repair might not be that complicated, just do the checks Ranchero50 suggested and you should be able to narrow things down and find the problem. :fr:

The cooling hose routing seems odd. No heater core, so I believe it is bypassed. Also a/c lines not hooked up.
