New Grl from NorCAL

Post by FordTugOcrat »

Hi everyone,

I live in NorCal and looking to get a 1970-1972 Ford f250 to pull my vintage trailer. I have a 1965 Aristocrat lo liner 15 ft that weighs in under 2000 pounds. I wish I could get something older, but I need disk brakes , PS, auto tranny that will tow my trailer. looking forward to my new and long awaited dream of owning a piece of Ford history

Well I am headed out today to possible look at 2 trucks today. At 71 f250 390 and a 72 F250 360. My main issue is, I have used the ford decoder on this site on 2 occasions both original motors codes on original motors have turned up being different than what the owners say. It's so weird. :? Like today I am going to look at the 71 and owner tells me its the original motor 390 but the riveted tag indicated it a 360 cid. He even double checked cause I sounded like I knew what I was talking about :hd: cause I'm doing my research  but I hope my 2 hour drive one way brings me to my new found friend :) cause I really want the 390 :)

A wooden dowel will tell no lies. 15/15" socket will turn the engine over at the crank. Remove a spark plug. Insert dowel in the hole, rotate engine to deepest spot and mark the dowel. Rotate engine to highest spot and mark the dowel. 3.5" = 360, 3.75" = 390

There's a lot of 360 ci 390's out there.

Thank you everyone for the nice welcome. I DID end up buying a 1971 f25o camper special custom with a 390/ c6 nice big back tires . Supper excited about this baby too. I drove it home from where I bought it 1.5 hours drive. Drove great and strong.... when i would come to a stop light during this ride the ideal was really high. LIke it wanted to jump the line ready to run. 2 days later I went to start it and it died. drovve it 1 block to a stop light and it died .... idealed just went out. So is this my carburetor giving me issues? Im wondering if I should just get a full check up on everything.

Now if i drive it I have to kind reve it up at a stop. Not something I feel is practical . any suggestions for this newbie girl who wants to learn . thanks everyone
