new member from so cal saying Hello

Post by SoCal250 »

Hello from sunny So Cali ...I just Picked up a 69 F 250 camper Special 390 c6 auto with A/C it is in need of some TLC but pretty much intact surface rust only original tires and said to have 65,000 original miles it sat for 12 years in someones driveway then he gave it to the guy i bought it from and sat another year before he finally decided just to get rid of it . the body is in good cond but the motor and trans had major leaks i think thats why they stopped driving it not wanting to put money into it anymore ,its going to be a project I want to go through it all I already dropped the oil pan I was expecting sludge city but i was amazed how clean the pan was only a little sludge at the bottom the sides were clean the motor was spotless inside but for some reason he put Gas in the oil ??? even the gas IMO would not clean a engine that well for a 46 year old engine i thought it was water at first and had to know so i caught some in a pan and threw a match in it and it lit up like a campfire . the valves look good and I can see a newer intake gasket has writing on it Im hoping the eng is ok so far i replaced the pan /gasket /oil adapter gasket / new fuel pump / replaced gas hoses / and bought a ton of parts planning on taking the trans out to replace main seal on both eng and trans to be sure looking forward to getting it right and on the road thanks for having me look forward to meeting good people who share the same interest ... :fr:

What area are you in?
Rear main isn't one piece. It's actually easier to replace the rear main if you pull the engine.

It's just easier because the oil pan has to come off and the oil pump dropped into the pan before you can slide the pan out. You can also address any other issues at the same time (intake gasket, timing chain, freeze plugs, valve seals, etc)

man well see i was thinking chevy i did drop the pan took out the oil pump replaced gasket put pump rod back in and replaced the pan and gasket had to jack up the engine to get it out had at least 1/4 " of old grease /oil that was like glue to the pan trying to slide it out clean that all up not crazy about the position of the drain plug right under the crossbeam oil city there i did remove the inspection cover in the rear between eng and trans and the flex plate /covertor was clean no oil or trans fluid in between so it seems it was not leaking but taking a chance i think the trans was leaking bad but i think he overfilled it I removed pan on that and bought the seals for the gear selector and rear trans seal also yep it needs freeze plugs and the whole works i drove it before i bought it it ran 65 70 on the fwy then i ran out of gas the selector knob was broken on the fuel selector tried to put gas in it on side of road and it went all over the ground the rubber hose was cracked and it lost its prime then battery went dead crazy purchase i had it towed home got home at midnight he put gas in the oil for some reason ...

Is it Boxwood green and white two tone? I know where there is one sitting near that area.
If the diaphragm is blown in the fuel pump, the result can be gas in the oil.

no it looked like it was a tannish color originally and they painted it white but its all faded now , fuel pump might be were it came from glad i changed the pump and gasket well it has not ran daily for a long time since 05 im hoping for the best with the engine, the constant gas in the oil might be were the clean inside the motor came from but i try to look in the postitve on it went the opposite for years the doom and gloom perspective .
i already got under and took one drive line off the u joints were fried stuff like that im hoping it just was a leaker and they were not willing to pay to fix it guy told me he was the second owner and it had 65k on it he drove it from granada hills to burbank studios were he worked as a elect mech for years then bought a new truck had a big ol diamond plate tool box on it the valve covers were bent and leaking all down the back of the engine real bad might need to just replace them i guess best thing is to get it done with gaskets seals and start it back up need to rebuild the holly 2 bbl little things before i can start it might be better to later switch to a elec fuel pump.

All of my most memorable vehicles had great "first drive" stories. I can't imagine getting home without having to MacGyver something together by the side of the road from a shoe lace, pine resin and a soda can. Where's the fun in that?
