Mystery hood ornament
Just noticed another post about hood ornaments, and it got me thinking about the one on my bump. The hood came off a wrecking yard F250, and I never bothered to check the year or if it was a special edition. I always assumed it was original factory issue because the base has the right angles to fit the crown of the hood, but now I'm having doubts because I can't find pictures of it anywhere, and searches turn up nothing. Any thoughts?

Re: Mystery hood ornament
If I remember right there was a hood ornament that came on some of the bumps. I don't remember the year or model that it came on but there's somewhere on site a write up about the hood ornament with a picture.
I saw the write up one time a few years ago but have no idea of where to tell you look for it.

I believe it once said Explorer. I'm not positive it's original to our bumps but I know I've seen it on a dentside.

Re: Mystery hood ornament
Found it - 1965 Fairlane 500. Just spent way too many hours online trying to figure that one out. But now I can sleep...

Re: Mystery hood ornament
There was one like that on a truck that used to belong to my Granddad. From everything I could tell it was factory. The truck was an F250 I believe. I can check if it would help. My dad has the truck now.

Re: Mystery hood ornament
Please - I'd be interested to know if it's original or was added before I found the hood by a PO. Either way, I've already decided to keep it because I'm so used to seeing it out there when I drive.

Re: Mystery hood ornament
As promised, here is a pic of the one on my truck. As I said, It was on my Granddad's old blue 69, but my hood was shot and old blue is now pretty much a parts truck.
Not sure if the VIN helps any, but here it is for what the hood and hood ornament came off of. Not sure if there would be a designation that might indicate that as a trim type or something. The mounting hole for the ornament is a bit too good IMO to be installed aftermarket by my Granddad. Not really his style.

Re: Mystery hood ornament
Awesome - thanks for taking the time to do that. It's a little different to mine and it's showing up as the kind fitted to '66 Galaxie 500s, but the mounting hole appears to be in exactly the same spot. Weird - what's with bumps showing up with car emblems?

I also came across this in an unrelated search. This one also seems to be stock.

Same style and position as yours. What are the odds?

Re: Mystery hood ornament
That one is a Brazilian model truck though. I didn't realize how similar it was to my granddad's 69.

Re: Mystery hood ornament
I believe they were of the accessory variety on our trucks through any FLM Dealership and later on some dent sides from the factory.

Re: Mystery hood ornament
Okay, so after talking to my dad about the hood ornament that was my granddad's I posted picks of before, it seems I was wrong. According to my dad, the ornament actually came from a 65 Galaxy. My Granddad just thought it looked good on the truck.

Re: Mystery hood ornament
Probable the same deal with mine - someone saw a Fairlane and liked the way it looked. I might take mine off today for safe keeping - the windshield wiper already got trashed by someone with a grudge, and I can see the hood ornament being an easy target. It'll give me a chance to clean it up anyway.
Thanks for the follow up
