Painting OVER Rustoleum...

Post by PhilsBumps »

Greetings, guys. I think I have a new question regarding the "cheap" Rustoleum paint jobs out there...
Has anyone tried to paint over rolled on Rustoleum?
My truck was painted by an elderly gentleman a couple of owners back with light blue Rustoleum (as far as I can tell), with a roller and trimmed out with a paint brush. Honestly it's damned close the the original sky view blue, a bit lighter though... but has virtually no gloss and the worse case of orange peel, among other textures, I've ever seen.
I'm going pretty low budget on cleaning it up, and not wanting to have it blasted. Just not in the budget, plus I'm not going for a show vehicle, just something to drive around in the summer, plus the occasional trip to the lumber yard. I want presentable, not show quality.
All that being said, I'm hoping to sand it down to remove the texture and paint SOMETHING over it. It seems to have cured and adhered nicely... does anyone know if I can spray something over this mess without having to sand it all off? Worse case I can just apply more Rustoleum over it to freshen it up, but it will still have the same issues with looking nice and durability.
Any suggestions BESIDES stripping to bare metal?
And sorta on topic, does anyone have an opinion on the electric spray guns out there? I'm not in the market for a good compressor right now (again, I've got to go low budget this go-around) but cannot see rolling on another mess or breaking out the rattle cans...
Thank you much in advance for any ideas!!

wet sand that bad boy with 600 grit then get ya a polishing tool with pad and polishing compound and make that rustoleum shine. I'm just thinking the low budget way.

Honestly... when I bought the truck that WAS my first thought! :D
I'll have to give it a shot and see what happens on a small area... maybe this weekend... at least it would be a start to smoothing everything out even if it doesn't polish up.
You, sir, are thinking along the right lines as far as budget... start with the least invasive and certainly cheapest!
I do have some surface rust poking through in a few small areas... but I'm assuming this is an off the shelf color and the match would be at least kinda close. Or I could try my hand at two toning where I do have to go to bare metal. :woohoo: I'm sure I can get it pretty good without a gun and compressor.

I'm not impressed by the electric spray guns. I bought one of those Wagner Power Painters several years ago intending to paint my front porch. After about 15 minutes spraying I tossed it. All it did was spit and run. They're ok for spraying things line water seal products where finish doesn't matter but I wouldn't try to paint anything with it.

Yeah, I was doubting that those sprayers would work... I'll have to come up with an alternative one I'm ready for that step. 8)

philsbumps, just saw your post about painting over rustoleum. i painted my 88 ranger the small truck. with rustoleum a few years ago. then i changed my mind about the color. it went on pretty easy. i sanded it for a reg.spray job. i sanded it with some 80 grit wet/ dry sandpaper.sanding it dry. i used reg.automotive paint that Oreillys sells. i went with olive drab.that was about 4 or 5 years ago it is still holding up pretty good. hope this might be of some help.
