Dustless Blasting - Thoughts/Reviews?

Post by treverd »

A local company quoted $700 to remove all paint/rust on our 72' F100, if we remove all trim/chrome.

Is the dustless blasting a recommended tactic for getting our bumps ready for a good paint job? If not, what would you go with?
What can we do before or after the blasting to mitigate flash rusting?

As always thanks guys,
Trever

I paid $300 a guy to come to my house and dustless blast both sides of my hood, fenders, and doors. Worked every bit as good as regular sand blasting. He rinsed the pieces afterwards and claimed to add some sort of rust inhibitor to the rinse. The pieces did not flash rust. Granted they only set around a few days prior to priming. $700.00 for everything does not sound to bad.

I know this post is a little old, but it applies well here. I am looking into using the dustless blasting option for my 71 4x4 shortened and 69 LWB if all goes well. Has anyone used this? Is this the same as soda blasting? Is sand blasting better or worse? Anything a newbie should be aware/cautious of? As always, thanks for the help!

I didn't blast any body parts but I've blasted almost everything else. I used Black Diamond coal slag media and an old open suction pot. Coal slag media does not hold moisture like sand does and does not leave behind any silica residue so it doesn't need any special cleaning afterward. It also does not generate as much heat as sand does. The only thing to be careful of when blasting is to not linger in any one spot for too long and keep a little distance between the gun and the object if it's thin sheet metal like body parts. Move around a lot on the part. I had a local guy quote blasting my frame and he wanted $700 just to sand blast my frame, not even priming it. Here's what I used (30/60 grit in the red bag) http://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/produc ... -abrasives and the pot I have.

Thanks for the information! I'm still weighing my options. I may have to give that coal slag a try. Main thing is I want to kill ALL rust inside and out. Even in the hard to get to places.
