Gas Cap Relocating?
I want to move my gas tank out of the cab for several reasons. Patching the factory hole in the drivers side of the cab for the gas cap is easy enough (LMC Truck even has a part specifically for this). Where I am stuck is where to put the gas cap now. The only factory placement I have ever seen with the bump side is there on the drivers side of the cab. I don't have to go with an original style solution, but I want it to look good. Not like an afterthought. Being "hidden" is an option too. Has anyone else done this before? Ideas ans pictures are welcome. Where is a good place to relocate the gas cap?

Where are you putting the tank? That has a lot to do with where you're gonna fill it from. I have a flareside that I've put the aux tank in. I'm planning to run the fill behind a door in the bed. Here's a few options. http://www.fordification.com/tech/fueltank01.htm

Re: Gas Cap Relocating?
Well, to be honest I haven't started the tank move yet, But it's quite cold here and there is currently no room in my garage. So I am doing my homework. The link you posted has a lot of good information in it. Thanks! My goal is to go with a rear-mounted tank. I would like to do a tank mounted between the frame rails under the bed. I understand that there is an issue as to what tanks will physically fit here though. I would like to go with the tank placement that works best and is still safe. I am ok with doing a fuel access door if necessary.

Re: Gas Cap Relocating?
After running the truck for a year I'm going to install some flavor of tank in the frame rails. The original aux tank was too big to fit with the 47rh tranny. I'm going to reuse the original fill and just have the pipe go through the cab floor to the tank. To me the cab mounted fill is one of the cool things about these trucks.

Don't get me wrong. I like the way the cab mounted fill cap looks. I think it gives a certain muscle look that compliments the truck's style well. I want to preserve that feel. I'm just trying to find an alternative that looks just as classy and allows the tank to be mounted not in the cab. Based on the extremely helpful input from you guys (Thank you) I'm leaning towards mounting the tank in the frame. You have all given me a lot to consider.
BTW, this is the truck I'm talking about...

It's a 71 4x4 with a shortened wheel base and bed (both done by the PO). I'm going for an overall sporty/muscle look. The bed is actually around 8" shorter than the factory short beds. I'm going to have to do something about those rear wheel wells though. Just looks weird on such a short bed to have the LWB wheel well opening. Thus, I'm ok with other modifications on this particular truck; IE the fuel tank and cap.
