under hood paint

Post by Cheryl »

Restoring 1967 Ford F100 and have a question on the type/color of paint that was original on the fenders inside the engine compartment. Hope I am asking this correctly...I am talking about the inner fenders that you see when you open the hood and are looking at the engine.
Was it painted the color of the truck? The truck is wimbledon white and red. Could they have been black?
Also the frame? Was it black and was it shiny or mat or satin? More than one question but it sort of all goes together. Thanks!!

Yes, the inner fenders and core support are originally black. Some people like to repaint with gloss black but I prefer semi-gloss black. Frame should also be semi-gloss black.
If you're doing a frame-off resto, I recommend getting everything sandblasted to remove all traces of rust and to create better adhesion surface for the paint. Powdercoating the frame and inner fenders is also an option.

All ready balsted and primed and now painted too shiny I guess.

Inner fenders and radiator support would have been some flavor of satin to semigloss black. Ford didn't let anything go to waste and the parts were done in batches. Some parts were dipped and other sprayed. One thing it's hard to explain, none of these trucks were built with much quality. Misaligned panels, orange peal in the paint are normal. A lot of the chassis parts were left natural with paint stripes to help the assembler grab the right components. Google mustang concourse restoration for some better ideas.
