Is my rust minor, not too bad, or REALLY bad?
Looking under my '67 always makes me cringe. Attached are some pics of the underside of my truck. I'm no paint and body pro so I'm just wondering how bad my rust is. Will one of the products by Eastwood or Por15 work for me? I don't know the details of how to use these products. I plan on giving it a good pressure wash, but will I have to sand or wire wheel everything before applying one of these rust converter/killer? Any guidance would be appreciated.

It's just surface rust and is treatable with POR-15 or Eastwood Rust Encapsulator. Get some cheap brushes from HD/Lowe's and treat it like the Sistine Chapel. Avoid getting it on your hands... it takes FOREVER to wear off.
What would be bad is flaky, crusty rust...
Where are you in NorCal? I'm over here in the Concord/Pleasant Hill area.

Thanks HIO. Is anything else intended to be applied over the POR-15 or Eastwood Encapsulator? My plan is to take the bed off and flip it over to treat the underside, and treat the frame rails too. Not sure yet if I have to take the cab off to treat the underside of it. The driver side floor pan has a hole in it through which I can see the road so I may be pulling the cab off too. I really don't want to if I don't have to.

I blasted all of my parts, coated with POR-15/Rust Encapsulator and then topped it all with 2 coats of Eastwood Chassis Black, although any epoxy or enamel will do. Both the POR-15 and Eastwood Rust Encapsulator will "gray out" after a couple of months. Still good coverage, just doesn't look as good. I covered the underside of my cab with rubberized textured undercoating, aerosol cans from the parts store. Get the Rustoleum brand instead of the store brand, it's better quality.

When you guys say "blasted", do you mean sand blasting or just blasting the parts with a pressure washer? I had planned on just using my pressure washer and a wire brush on any stubborn clumps, then the rust treatment.

Generally blasted = media/sand blasting. But if you just want to POR-15 it then all you need to do is get rid of all of the loose stuff, no need to blast itkaliona wrote:When you guys say "blasted", do you mean sand blasting or just blasting the parts with a pressure washer? Bumpside Ford truck, made out of an 1967 f100, a 1972 f100, a 1978 lincoln, a 1987 f250, a 1993 crown victoria, a 2003 crown victora, and a whole lot of cutoff wheels and mig wire. Doesnt have many uses but is amazing at confusing the guy behind the parts store counter

I media blasted my frame and suspension parts, siphon pot and Black Diamond, but just wire brushed with my angle grinder on the cab, doors, etc. Took those down to bare metal.

Both can be top coated. However, POR recommends using their product "Tie Coat" as a primer before finishing. Eastwood states their Encapsulator doesn't require a primer before finishing. I just Encapsulated a decent contour bumper and then top coated with Rustoleum gloss black.kaliona wrote:Thanks HIO. Is anything else intended to be applied over the POR-15 or Eastwood Encapsulator? Btw, your undercarrige surface rust looks the same as my '70. Next spring I plan to do the all the wheels wells. The others areas I am not so concerned.
Livermore!? Heck, PM me sometime. Maybe we can round up a few Bumpsiders and have a meet-up at the Dublin Hooters.... for the food of course.
