Long bed to short conversion dimensions(?)

Post by luke-ao »

Years a ago I swear I saw a post here with the dimensions to shorten a long styleside bed to make a short box, I cant seem to find it now, can someone point me in the right direction?

I have a SB flairside truck so I don't need to shorten the frame, just the box.

Thanks

Not the post your looking for but here's the dimensional diagrams for both short box and long box. http://www.fordification.com/tech/bodybuilder70.htm The rest is just math.

I can probably do the math but I remember a post that outlined the job. ;)

Try this one: Fordification Thread: JG_F100's '72 LWB to SWB Conversion & CV Retrofit... I believe the bed is sectioned 16 inches in front and four inches aft of the wheel well.

You'll want to weld your frame as shown below... not the simple angle cut in the thread above. The overlapped "Z" provides more welded surface area and is much easier to align provided great care is taken to make it spot on. The rounded turns eliminate sharp corners where cracks tend to appear... the smooth turns acts like one continuous welded seam rather than three separate seams. Add fishplates over the weld on the inside C-channel and, for added strength, box the affected section of frame with 3/16ths plate.

Yea, I ran across that thread, I already have a SWB frame, I'm just switching from a flairside to styleside bed. ;)

I thought about the dimensions last night here is what I come up with which confirms your statement above.

L.W.B. 131"
S.W.B. 116"
----------------------
(edit: see post below) (subtract difference) = 16.2"

Long Bed I.L. 98.2"
Short Bed I.L. 78.2"
-------------------------
(edit: see post below)(subtract difference) = 20.0"

(edit see post below) That would be 16.2" before and 3.8" after wheel well.

Now I'll have to do some measurements on the bed rails to see how they line up with the frame...

Reading through the link above I found this, I'll add the link and info in case it is helpful down the road for someone else.
Front cut should be 16.2"
Rear cut should be 3.8"
(L-6 is the key measurement)

Thanks!
Since these pictures, I've shaved the post pockets, shaved the tail lights, blasted down to bare metal, all major body work is done and primed. Currently blasting the underside.
