68 Grill questions

Post by 76Kroh »

I have a few grill questions and I know you guys have the answers. Are all of the grills on the 68s aluminum? I see about half of them painted and that has me wondering. Also I can find just about every other grill aftermarket except a 68. Does anyone know where I can find a new 1968 grill? Mine has a few small issues, can it be repaired and chromed?

There were both Steel and Aluminum grilles. The Steel grilles are painted and the Aluminum ones were polished and anodized.
As for after market grilles. NONE No 67 no 68's or 69's are reproduced. 70-71 and 72 grilles are reproduced but not 67-69.
A true 68 grille has the center horizontal bar that is half round with NO indentation. The later 68 models and 69 models have the indentation on the center horizontal bar for the red paint. The red paint was only applied to the Aluminum grilles. No steel grilles came with red stripe.
Just about any grille can be repaired. If your dealing with a steel grille, find a good body shop and see if they can fix it for you. If they are good, they'll also know a good chrome shop.

Good info thanks. Mine is Aluminum :-/ I wish it was steel I have a few very experienced friends in the Auto Body industry. I may just buy a used steel one and powder coat it red to match my wheels etc. We have a lot of bumps in good condition down here in AZ.
