BOARDS IN BED OF 1969 F100
I am now rebuilding the bed on my 1969 F100, step side. I would like to know if it is necessary to cut grooves in the boards for the metal strips that go between the boards. If so, how deep should they be cut?. I have a DeWalt laminate trimer which seems to cut a nice groove with a 1/4 in bit .Do the grooves add anything to the installation?

Measure the height of the metal strips that will fit between the boards. Cut your grooves shallower than the height of the strips so that stuff will slide on the metal and not the boards.
I didnt have a router to do mine and just used my Ryobi table saw. Be careful if you do it that way, it has to be under control.
Otherwise people will usually turn to the router. Measure. Use your highschool shop class skills?
