Are the 1970/71/72 grills the same dimensions with different inserts, or are they each unique to that year?

71 and 72 shells are the same and 71/72 inserts can be swapped.

The 70 shell is one-year only as are the inserts.

Attempt to put a 70 insert into a 71/72 shell and you will discover the mounting tabs do not align (and vice versa).

You can put 'em in there with a little "adjusting" of the tabs. They're not a perfect fit but will fill up the hole. The bottom sticks out about 3/4" at the bottom. Here's my '70 with '72 inserts. The top and bottom tabs line up but the '70 has 4 and the '72 has 6. Just leave the 2 side one's out.
