new guy from arkansas

Post by bones67 »

Hello everyone this is bones67 checking in with pictures of my truck. my username was a typo but its fine. i have a 1968 ford f100 i picked up for $600 with a title. it runs and has a working factory heater and the only rust is floorboards. my gauges work all of them, and my dash light works. now the bad. it has a 240 inlline six that has oil leaks EVERYWHERE and a 3 speed with a column out of a 1970-1972 that is not wired up so no blinkers but hazards, taillights, brake lights etc...work. and the column 3 speed shifter is REALLY sloppy like its hard to find first and reverse as well as neutral and i feel like its going to fall apart. the trans is fine and the linkage seems fine maybe its in the column? you also have to rev it pretty high and slip the clutch to get it to go but once it goes its great. Any way here she is

Please forgive this question if it comes across as obvious. Are you SURE you're in first? If the shifting is as sloppy as you're saying, then perhaps you're not hitting first when you think you are. As a result, you really have rev/slip to not stall on takeoff.

Just a thought.

Cheers,
Duane

Well i can pull it down after messing with it and its close to me and all the way down and i can push it up and feel it go into reverse. but once I'm in first it will shift to second and third normally. its the "shift collar"? I think its called. where the shifter mounts on the column that is very loose

I had issues with mine shifting from first to second, through the "gate". Disassembled it and rebuilt it all new wearable parts. I didn't do anything to the shift collar. My lower column bearing was shot, the spring on the bottom of the shift tube was compressed, and the plastic "washers" between the shift levers on the bottom were worn out. My lower column bearing allowing the column shaft to wobble around wearing down my shaft and I replaced with one I got from a member here (they don't reman them). The spring on the bottom of the shift tube is what keeps tension on the shift mechanism so it has that firm feel going between gears and helps it stay in gear. The plastic washers and steel shims between the shift levers on bottom is what keeps the levers aligned so the boss on the bottom of the shift tube slides in and out of the appropriate slots in the levers. Also, the rubber shift linkage bushings were worn which caused excess slop between the levers and the linkage rods. All of this combined made for some sloppy shifting and "hunting" for gears. Once I replaced it all, it shifted smooth and easy. I rebuilt it in a weekend but that included overnight drying time when I repainted the column. Here's some good photos of how it goes together. http://www.fordification.com/tech/3spd-column_01.htm Start a thread in the "Steering" forum and we can talk you through it. It's not difficult and parts are cheap. Before you get started, inspect the lower column bearing and try to get a look at your steering shaft to see if it's worn down. That's the tough one. If it's toast, you'll need some time to locate a replacement or repair your original. Good luck!
