Color Code Mystery Solved? "SJ"

Post by GTWilliams »

Check this out. My color code on my VIN for my a '77 XLT 250 says "SJ". My truck is two-tone: blue and grey.

It looks like Ford had that same blue for various vehicles and called it different names. And since my truck is two-tone they likely only had room for two letters on the VIN and converted "3-G" to "S". (Is this true?)

Touch-up paint companies only have this color as 3-G. (!!!) See Chart. You would think the two major touch up paint companies and local Ford dealer would would have known this info. How would I know S is 3-G?

I'm 99% sure I finally solved this paint mystery but please tell me if I'm wrong.

This sort of reminds me of the movie remake thing - Same name for different movies! Ought to be The Flight of the Phoenix 2008 or whatever year it was.

Opposite with paint - Should be SAME NAME and SAME CODE regardless.

Ford should have had better sense.

Of course, they should have had better sense than to bury the A/C fan motor like they did in dent sides when it COULD and SHOULD have been designed to be replaced from under in the hood.

Believe me, my young friend, there is nothing - absolutely nothing - half so much worth doing as simply messing about in garages. (Apologies to Kenneth Grahame.)
