1972 f100 Short bed conversion

Post by Jmajors »

I can not find any info as to the exact differences in length. I want to know how much to shorten in front of wheel wells and how much to shorten behind wheel wells... I know that the wheel base is 16 inches shorter... Do I shorten 16 inches under cab and if so how much off the rear of the frame.. I want to use all the factory body side mouldings and have it look factory. Please help

16" in front of the axle and 4" on the end of the frame. The easiest place to shorten it is behind the cab there is a straight section of frame there.

So does that also mean I section 16 inches out of the bed in front of wheels and 4 inches off the bed behind the wheels as well?

That is right, then you have your drive shaft, brake lines, your brake cables you can just drop the extension out. If you pull a search you can find some threads where others have shortened theirs.

Here's a decent one: http://www.fordification.com/forum/view ... 97#p351211

Personally, I would not do the slant cut as pictured below. Rather, it should be a "Z" cut with horizontal and overlapping frame sections for more welded area.. and weld front AND back plus a fish plate.
