How To: F250 hubcaps painted a different way.

Post by HIO Silver »

Hey guys (and gals). 'Just wanted to share a different way of detailing F250 hubcaps (PN C8UA-1130-A).

I got this entire lot for $10 at the swap meet... I was prolly the only one who knew what they were. Five are shallow and one is deep.. the deep one is rusted through and will likely end up as a clock for the workshop.

Image

After 24 hours in the electolysis vat to dissolve the rust. Works great. Here is how to do it if you're interested: http://www.rowand.net/Shop/Tools/Electrolysis.htm

Image

Etched primed, primer-surfacer, wetsanded with 400, a coat of sealer, and shot with VHT cast aluminum:

Image

Masked and shot with Rustoleum semi-gloss black engine enamel. The trick is to use 3M fine line tape on the convex and concave turns. Then mask with 3M blue tape and masking paper (not newspaper!).

Image

After multiple maskings, shot with Ford engine red, Old Ford Blue engine paint, and appliance white enamel.

Image

Hand painted the details with Testor silver enamel. Finished for now.... only four more to go before clearcoating them all.

Nice work! I think on mine, I painted the lowest 'circle' (in between the fluted section and the center) with a black stripe. I used a 'paint pen' from Hobby Lobby. Took me about 20 minutes per hubcap. Love the centers on yours.
too many Fords, no where near 'nuff time.

or, money.

Thanks.

I debated whether to paint the inner black circle or not. It would have been a pain in the azz to mask so I skipped it. I think the painted crest makes up for it!

They are two versions: polished aluminum and painted. These were originally painted - and painted again!

Thanx for this. I am painting my hubcaps tomorrow and I had no clue at all how I was gonna do the crown. I get painting the black, but I could not figure out how to make the lines of the crown silver.
