How to mount body side molding

Post by bph »

Trying to replace the clips holding the body trim piece that runs on the side of my 1970 F250 Camper Special's bed. It utilizes those C-Shaped molding clips with rivets. Does anybody know how these are meant to be mounted?

Is this the 3 5/8" trim, on the upper portion of the body? If so, I just replaced the full trim on my '71 Ranger XLT this weekend and can offer some tips.

Hello,

It is the trim pictured in this photo, labeled "4". The mounting hardward is labeled "B".

Thanks for your assistance!

The clip is riveted to the bump contour.

I'm confused......If it is truly a replacement as you say, why can't ya use utilize the holes that are already there????

The clips do rivet on to the existing mounting holes, however I'm not sure how to slide the trim piece over these mounting clips once they are riveted to the body. The clips have delicate little tabs on the top and bottom that apparently "catch" the trim piece however when the clips are riveted these tabs are flush against the body with no space to allow the trim piece's groove to slide behind them.

Ok. I get it.

The moulding is installed by first getting the lower lip onto its tab and then pushing HARD upwards to catch the upper tab...all along its length.

Ah, ok. So I would go ahead and rivet all of the mounting clips to the body and then proceed, one by one, to get the bottom tab seated and then merely apply upward pressure until the top tab is seated?

I went the other way, and got the top tabs seated first so the trim hung loosely in place....I then applied downward pressure to engage the bottom tabs. This was very helpful in installing the longer sections.

I chose to just get a bunch of the large size bolt on mounts from auto fasteners.com

I do have a box of the plastic guys that I'll never use.
