Right place to get value of dad's truck?

Post by smdittmer »

I was amazed to find this forum! I'm betting you can help me.

I'm looking to find the value and possibly sell my dad's '72 F250 XLT Camper Special. I believe it has about 29k original miles on everything. It ran perfect when in was parked about 20 years ago. Dad bought it new and told me it was one of the very last F250 to roll off the Kansas City assembly line. It was outside all this time so will probably need painted. But the body and interior is perfect. Still has the camper on its back so a suspect the bed and top is fine. Tail gate was never been used and is stored in the garage.

I would not try to start it without tearing the engine down and making sure everything was free and lubricated. But no reason to think that if the engine was prepared properly, it would not be good as new.

What words of advise do you experts have for me?

All I can say from my experience is that all those years just sitting there will deteriorate most rubber hoses and gaskets and seals...so it might not take a lot to get it turned on, but it might take a lot of $$$ to restore it to a reliable condition.

While I agree with what red_67F100 said, a friend of mine was given a '79 F100 4x4 that had sat for 14 years. It took him a couple of weeks to break the engine free and get it running. He had to replace the rubber hoses under the hood immediately and the power steering hoses within a couple of weeks and put a new battery in it but drove it for a couple of years before trading it off with no other repairs. It's a crap shoot any way you look at it.

I agree with what has been said. If u decide to stay around, welcome aboard from Gerber, Ca. You will find great information on getting the truck ready to sell on this site, but you will have to put some $$ into it, to get a good return.
