Sorry, I didn't realize my introductory post to this forum, from 2 years ago, had come back up.

The Lincoln Mk VIII'S were the first to get the 4 R 70 W transmission around 1993 but, it was designed for the Ford Modular 4.6L engine bell pattern and won't bolt up to a Ford small block V8 or 240/300 inline six.

The 4 R's roots comes from the old 1980-1993 AOD and later AOD E transmissions. Just like those transmissions, the 4 R had factory improvements made to it over the course of its production. The best 4 R's to have are from 1998-2004. The 4 R models with a 'Windsor' block pattern would come from 3.8L Mustangs, 4.2L F-150 trucks or 5.0L Explorers/Mercury Mountaineers.
3 - starter bolt holes in the bell housing denotes a transmission for a 4.6L engine. 2- starter bolt holes denotes a 4 R that's compatible with a 'Windsor' block pattern.

The 4 R will work with E F I or can work with carburetion, if you devise a bracket to mount a TPS to the carbs throttle shaft. The 4 R can operate with a factory PCM or from a stand - alone shift controller. If the engine has a carburetor, the stand - alone shift controller will be the only choice (either way, I would prefer the programmable stand - alone controller).
