1977 F-250 Super Cab Camper Special

Post by 77SuperCabCamperSpecial »

Hello All,

I've inherited my grandfathers truck that he used to tow what I recall to be "A huge 5th wheel" I came across a 2013 39'2 repo'd Montana 5th wheel (weighs in at 13K+) lbs, from what I've used that old Ford to haul I feel I can haul anything with that 4-manual tranny with granny low. Its got trailer brakes, new engine, in super good shape, towed a diesel 2500 suburban on a triple axle trailer from San Diego to Vegas with no trouble, damn thing didn't even get hot. Is that Montana 5'er about as heavy as a top of the line 5'er from the late 70's? Sure don't want to buy a whole new truck, but also don't want this truck splitting in two going down the road with my kids either. Thoughts? We are starting off with local trips under 15 miles (I'm in San Diego so beach camping) just so I can get used to towing...

:wel: from SoCal (but north of you..)

You may also want to check out www.fordification.net as well as that site is dedicated to the dent side era trucks. Of course you are welcome here as well but you might get more detailed info regarding your truck there as well.

:wel: from Georgia! I wouldn't be overly concerned. These trucks are over engineered and take far more than they are spec'd for. I've hauled a 9600# track hoe on a 30' double axle trailer with my '77 short bed F100 2wd. Over 60 miles across the mountain with a bumper hitch. Oh, it was a squirrelly, pucker filled, ride but she pulled it like a champ. In my '70 F100 long bed, 302/3spd manual, I've hauled close to 2000#, in the bed, on more than one occasion.
