Instrument Cluster cover?

Post by qman »

Was in the UPull-n-Pay yesterday getting something for my beater. The donor was a 67 and the instrument cluster cover is steel. Never realized that. It was there and it was in good shape . . . no dents. Someone had painted it but that's easily remedied.

Are these things worth anything? I almost got it just cuz. If anyone needs one I'll go out and get it.

BTW, the front grill seemed to be in good shape too.

I used a steel cluster housing to install new gauges in my 72. I wanted to keep the original cluster intact in case i ever wanted to go back to stock. The steel housing is sought after by some folks for this reason. If it was a good price it might be worth pulling to use as swap meet fodder...

Howdy!
Short answer is yes, and no. The '67 "steely" instrument cluster bezel is a one-year specific bezel. Completely interchangeable with all bumpsides. I replaced the plastic one in my '68 because I like the clean look, the fact that it's steel, can be easily stripped, painted, powder coated, drilled for extra gauges, whatever. Year specific purists don't like seem to like them, though. The first one I bought, before I cured my anal-cranial inversion issues, was $65 off of ebay. Since then, I've pulled every last one I've come across at the various pick-your-part salvage yards. On sale, they cost me about $15 each, and they included the instrument cluster and wiring pig-tail.
Take care,
Joe

PS: I've been looking for a '67 front grille for two years. THOSE are worth a couple hundred bucks on up, depending on condition. Please let me know if you can pull one, and what shape it's in.
