Front Cab Mounts

Post by CV1186 »

Hello all. I am currently replacing the front cab mounts on my 68' I am using Dennis Carpenter, these are stamped like the originals and are great parts. Here is the problem, I tried to spot/ rosette weld the mounts in, but no matter what I tried welding upside down just didn't work. I'm considering riveting them with 3/16" steel pop rivets. Has anyone heard of someone doing this or should I start looking for a spot welder? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Welding upside down isnt impossible. Try turning the power / wire speed down to not cause a mess and blow through the metal?

Try putting the mounts in position, drill small holes in the corners then sheet metal screw the mounts in place. take all the carpeting out of the cab. Take a marker and as best you can, lay out the outline of the mount. Once you have determined the outer edge of the mount, remove the mount, drill a series of holes in the floor pan about 1/2 inch in from the outer edge of the mount out line all the way around. I usually use 5/16 or 3/8 bit, grind all surfaces to bare metal. Reinstall the mount with the sheet metal screws, go to the inside of the cab and weld the mount to the floor using the pre drilled holes in the floor pan. The only holes you should have to drill in the mount are the ones you use to position it. Remove the sheet metal screws and weld those holes shut.

MW2158, That is sheer genius! I didn't even finish reading your post because I was banging my head on the desk wondering why something so seemingly simple didn't occur to me. Thanks a lot that is the way I am going to do it.
