Under bed fuel tank using in cab filler?

Post by skblixt96 »

I love the look of the fuel filler neck sticking out of the side of my '72. I hate the fuel tank being inside my '72. Has anyone seen a fuel tank installed under the body that utilizes the factory filler?

I suppose it could be done, but you would have to come in the cab and down with an exit out the back of the cab somewhere above the tank, but below the bed. It would be interesting to see and a fill tube that long would probably hold another quarter gallon of gas at initial fill up, so that is a plus... It's an interesting concept, but I have never seen it done.

The Ford trucks built in the 30's and 40's had the gas tanks under the drivers seat which always created some source of excitement if the driver missed throwing out his cigar, the sending unit was leaking and the butt fell behind the seat! Moving the fuel tank is possible alright but you will need to vent the top of the tank to the top of the filler tube via a steel 3/8 line to let out the air as the fuel is added to the tank. Otherwise you are going to have a vapor lock and blowback of fuel as the escaping air from the tank is displaced by new fuel. Also you will need the proper fuel line to run from your filler cap to the tank. A bent piece of 1 1/2 inch exhaust pipe would be the proper material to use but why don't you just use the cap you have, block it off, find a gas tank that fills from the back and put the filler behind the licence plate in the center of the rear bumper if that works in your case. Sounds like a lot of work though. :D

there are saddle tanks available that fill from inside the fenderwell (pretty well out of sight), right in front of the tire. you could use these and just leave the filler neck in the cab...

You and I think the same! I have wanted to do this exact same thing! Yes, the neck should have a vent tube run to it, just like all newer vehicles. You could use a vented neck piece from many different junkyard vehicles and possibly piece together everything you need. I'd look for an internally vented neck(vent tube run inside the bigger tube) to run through the back wall, so it can be sealed easily with a grommet like the original factory one.

I am looking at doing exactly the same. Have you progressed any further on this as I just submitted a post on this in the engine forum? Any help or info on what you did would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers

It could easily be done. Routing would depend on which tank you use. Any quality muffler shop with a mandrel bender could fab it.

I have the under bed tank with the filler on the side of the bed. I am going to remove the in cab tank and keep the filler neck for storage or a power anetnna spot
