New guy - 1971 F-100 Custom 4x2 240 I6 and QUESTIONS!

Post by sampjenningd »

Hi guys!

Have tried doing some basic research but can't really find if these questions have been asked before. I have a 1971 F-100, have two curiosities:

*How do I check the oil on the blasted thing? I know the old girl leaks from a few places - something I am OK with - but she purrs along real nice, I just want to make sure she keeps doing so. Is there even a dipstick? Do I tip the truck on its side and let the oil pour out? Ha! Engine is the 240 I6 according to the factory VIN code.

*What octane fuel should I be using? Anything special? Right now, she's running on regular 87 octane E10 gasoline, but I'm sure that isn't ideal.

Thanks for the help! Might post pictures when I get home from work tonight. She has a new coat of paint and looks reeaaaallll purty.

:wel: from Georgia! According to this http://www.fordification.com/tech/image ... _I6-02.jpg the dipstick should be on the driver's side of the engine block, near the fuel pump. I've always run mid grade gas in my 302, she just seemed to like it better than 87 octane. Oddly enough, she didn't like premium though. Look forward to seeing some pics of the old girl!

Can't believe I wasn't able to find it.... almost as embarassing as the fact that it took me 2 days to figure out the hood release.....

I'll check on it when I get home :)

Welcome to the site.

The dumb question is the one not asked.

If you can, post some pictures.

Will do.

Some more details:

*3 on the Tree
*Seats are taken out of a conversion van and are the only item on the truck that is non-original
*I am the third owner - first owner had the engine rebuilt several years ago
*ONLY power option is brakes
*NO PS, NO A/C, still have original AM radio, and yes, I do listen to country music on it

Paid $3000 for the old gal. Mainly because the second owner loved the truck so much, because it's a rare, good condition example of a 4x2 I6 3-spd manual F-100, not some 360 4x4 hi-boy monstrosity which will suck up fuel faster than the new Raptors that I sell and be less reliable to boot.
