New member...first time truck owner.

Post by JTW_Jr »

Been reading the forum as a guest for a week now, figured since I am buying a 72 f100 in the morning from a friend, I figured I may as well register and become a member.

The one I am getting has the majority of the hard work done: engine rebuilt (390), trans rebuilt (c6), upgraded to front discs and power steering from a 77, grille from a 68, rebuilt rear with 3:55 Auburn locker.

Needs some final touches, bodywork, paint, interior finished.

Be a finish as I drive type of project. Needed a new driver and couldn't force myself to get a new car, too much electronics and plastic.

Nice truck! But rather than calling it a 72, just call it a Franken-bump because that is what you have. It is hard to identify everything with the few pictures you have put up so far, but your cab is a 67 for sure. It is a one year only cab and can be identified by your heater controls. 67 is the only year they had the pull knob controls for the heat. You also have the 67 only rear view mirror which goes with that cab. 68-72 had the mirrors affixed to the windshields. Your driver's door is 68-72. Your grille is a 69, and a nice one at that. Those are just a few of the observations. But since it was sold to you as a 72, I would check a few things just so you know what you are dealing with when you work on it. Your door might have been off of a 72 which would give you a 72 door tag. But check the VIN on the frame and see what it comes back to. You might have a 67 truck underneath as well. Most of the parts interchange throughout the years, but especially in 67, there were some one year only designs.

Nothing wrong with a Frankenbump. I have one myself! My Crew Cab is a 69, but with all the different parts on it, there is no way to figure that out without checking the VIN. :D

Take a look at this section and then have fun going over your truck to figure it all out: http://www.fordification.com/tech/67-72ID_01.htm

Thanks for the info, indeed this is a frankenBump. I can already see this place and it's members are a wealth of info. I have spent many hours reading past threads and doing searches.

Titled as a 72, but is a hodge podge of parts. Front disc setup is from a 77.

Previous owner is a friend of mine, so as he remembers exactly what was what he is letting me know.

Think I shall nickname her " Frumpy". First thing she needs is to get rid of the fuel smell from the tank inside the cab.

That is a whole VIN (minus the F at the beginning)... Your frame is from a 1967 Ford F100 2wd built in October of 1966, so I am assuming that your cab is from that same truck. More than likely, someone put doors on it from a 72 and registered it with the 72 VIN number on the door tag.

With what you found on your frame, here is how 10AKA33964 decodes...
The 10 shows it was an F100 2wd.
The first A means the motor it came with was a 240 cid, 6-cyl.
The K means it was built at the Kansas City plant.

The next A shows it was a 67 with the numbers after being the sequence number.
A and B series were 1967.
C and D series were 1968.
Late D, E, and F were 1969.
G, H, and J were 1970.
Late J, K, L, and early M were 1971.
Mid M, N, and P were 1972.

Decoding your VIN is found here: http://www.fordification.com/tech/VIN67.htm
