Paint thinner/stripper

Post by Craigerf100 »

Is it kosher to use paint thinner/stripper to strip a fender of its paint? Does that even work?

Laquer thinner works to remove rattlecan paint or primer.
Paint stripper like Jasco will take off anything, expensive stuff, key is to work super clean, small area at a time, clean up as you go, take your time.

Thinner (mineral spirits) takes forever or not at all on factory finishes.

The "best" and cleanest way, IMO, is to buy a roll of 80-grit paper for a DA and get at it. Less messy than chemical stripping which takes three or four applications and by then rust has started to form.

It also depends on how much paint you're stripping.
If you have 1 repaint , 80 grit and a D A will do ok.
If you have multiple layers of paint and primer you could use stripper to get most of it off and then D A it.
Chemical stripper is no fun, but it works.
Make sure you have fresh air and running water available.
and keep kids and pets out of the area. :2cents:

I have used the stripper pads that look like a coarse sponge with excellent results. The ones for a drill may work, but I used the ones for an angle grinder. Use the coarse ones, not the ones that look like a scotchbrite pad. Alot quicker and cleaner than paint stripper.

Not to mention paint stripper is very caustic and VERY harmful to the environment.
