My $100 wood bed

Post by mnkeeking »

Howdy!
I drove around with a piece of plywood as my bed floor for over a year. Finally got sick of it and its noise. I was looking at complete kits for the bed the other day and they are all out of my price range now. But as I looked, I figured I could do it myself. I went down to Lowes and bought eight pine 1x6x8s, a box of carriage bolts, nuts, washers and lock washers. I also picked up a rabbeting bit for my router on sale for $16. I spent a total of $97.36. I reused the metal bed strips, just sanded and painted them black.

Mostly, I wanted to see if I could do it with an eye toward way better lumber after the truck is painted. It took a bit of creativity to get the boards and strips lined up and even then my work isn't perfect. I still need about 35 fender washers and 6 long bolts to bolt the bed to the frame and cross members, but the bed is solid and I don't think it looks too bad. It'll certainly support more weight than a piece of plywood only held in by the lip around the edge of the upright bed walls. Took about two days to get this far as I had to wait for paint to dry. If you have the router bit, saved your metal bed strips and just bought bolts, nuts, and washers it would lower your cost. If you have questions, PM me, I'm glad to help.
Take care,
Joe
