The prime look

So I've noticed that the matte black or flat primer black is kind of popular on classics which I like. And I'll be doing my trucks body work In stages before I can even think about paint. So the prime look ill be going for.

So my question is. How do these people get such a Solid matte primer black? Solid as in no scuffs, i wang to keep it smooth looking. I've noticed as I prime my fender, after drying I touch the fender and my nail or what ever leaves a mark on the primer. Do they buff it or seal it?
How do I make my trucks primer durable enough until I paint it? Ill be driving it from time to time so I'd like it to look decent looking.

my guess is they are using the paint that looks like black primer. The new hot rod look. Seems to me the only way to protect the primer you have now is to clear coat it but that will lead to more work later on down the road. With that said i think i would just paint it with color of choice or prime again right before it's time to paint. Just my

The good looking flat rods use catalyzed paint with a matte finish.

Summit offers several matte finish paints in two-part to get the look... black, primer red, and grey (IIRC).

The less gloss a paint has the easier it is to scuff (all else being equal). Of course nobody who makes primer is going to waste the time or money to work to improve the gloss or resistance to scuffing on a product designed to be sanded. I am using a flat black enamel with hardener (catalyst) which helps with the durability. I find that once it catalyzes fully, it sands very well, but doesn't turn chalky. I am going to finish it in matte black and will be experimenting with a mix of flat and gloss to get the look I want.

The clear in your link is Lacquer that is a hot paint you will need to be carful what you spray it over as it can lift some types of paint. Try something like this, several companies make the Hot Rod finish. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-up312/overview/

duplicolor makes a product that I saw at oreily's the other day it is a 2 stage paint that you get the standard black paint and use a flat clear coat so you get the flat black look with all of the protection of a standard base clear
