Project: Restore Pop's F100, day 1

Post by bartonhollow »

Greetings, ya'll.

I have inherited my grandfather's 1969 F100 that he purchased new in December 1968. This is a really neat specimen in that like most depression-era men of his age, he has saved every piece of paper and receipt related to the truck since December 1968 including the original sale receipt ($2,500 - ha!) and a log of repairs.

Now, as his health has withered and abilities deteriorated, so has the truck, but, I have been tasked with what I feel like is the responsibility of restoring ol' blue, and it needs a lot of work, but I am up for task (and have had a tiny amount of experience based mostly in a partial restore of an old '68 Beetle a few years back).

These are the items on my agenda, in this order, and I would appreciate any additional advice, because I want to do it right and the honor of having inherited it justice:

- fuel tank cleaning - I believe there to be junk in the tank accumulated over the years based on his description of it stalling but coming back to life after blowing out the fuel lines a time or two
- a bit of body repair where there has been some rust spots, and subsequent paint job
- door seals and gaskets replacement
- spray-in or roll-in bedliner to repair and protect the bed
- replacement or fixing the cloudy windshield
- radiator replacement (it has a leak on the top somewhere, so still driveable but needs monitoring)
- possibly relocation of the spare tire from the bed mount to under the bed in the rear
- add a hidden kill switch to deter theft
- add a 2" towing receiver for something better than the ball on the bumper!

Now, the original 300 I6 has less miles than my daily driver Accord and still runs strong, but between the audible tapping valves and required choke, leaking gasket cover, no factory power brakes, steering, transmission, etc, I presume an overhaul will eventually come into play.

Thanks for looking.
