Homemade Temporary Paint Booth in one side of my garage.

Post by undertakerman »

Any ideas on how to turn one side of my garage into a temporary paint booth for painting. I know I need fans, filters, a lot of plastic, 2 x 4's , a paint spray testing board, a table for mixing and of course tape. But how do I put it all together ? Oh yes, my garage is open up through the trusses to the decking. :? :? :? :? :? :? :? :?

I built this one in my basement.

It's just for painting parts but big enough to hang a door or fender and such, 5' x 5' x 6-1/2' tall. I built frames out of 2x2's and covered them in 4 mil plastic. Then drilled and bolted them together so I could disassemble it. I built a plenum box, 12" deep and the same size as the back wall, out of 2x2's and skinned it with 1/8" hardi-board. A friend gave me a 220V exhaust fan out his old central heat/air unit that pulls 1200 cfm, for free, and I mounted it on a separate piece of plywood and hold it in place with wing nuts. I ran an 8" a/c duct from the fan to the one of the vents at the top wall of the basement. Then built a frame out of 1x2's to hold 6 of the cheap 20"x25" a/c air filters. I put an electric heater in it and close the door, during the winter, to get the temps up to 75-80*. Pull the heater out, kick the fan on and spray, give it a few minutes to exhaust, and then put the heater at the corner of the door to blow heat back in. When I'm through painting, I can break it down and store it. This is just a small parts booth but the same concepts can apply to a larger area.

The one thing I suggest is an old school approach in addition to what was given above is wet the floor down to keep the dust down. The problem is by me they really frown upon any painting of vehicles unless it is in a proper booth in a big legal way. So what I do now is I do the prep and go to a local body shop to have it sprayed.
