Door hinge CHECK bushing. Where to get one?

Post by guhfluh »

My driver door hinge check bushing is worn out and pops loudly every time I open or close the door. The rest of the hinge bushings are fine. From what I have found looking through parts catalogs and parts stores is only the hinge pin bushings and NOT the double lipped check bushing. A hinge pin bushing would work if it had two lips on it to keep the check in the center of the bushing and prevent it from riding off, but I haven't found anything that looks like it would work. I even need one for my Dodge Ram and can't find one.

Has anyone replaced this bushing and found a source for one?

I'm not exactly sure what you're referring to. Mine only has the hinge pin bushings on top and bottom. I am not aware of another bushing in that assembly?

The portion that keeps the door "in check" at certain degrees of opening is normally called the "door check". The spring in there is called the "check spring". The spring acts on a detented lever and the lever rides on a bushing/bearing around a pin. When you open or close the door, the lever rides on the bushing until the bushing falls into one of the detents, then it applies resistance to the assembly to keep the door in place in that position.

The bushing normally rolls around on the pin and lever smoothly, but mine is so worn out, that it wobbles and snaps. Spray lube helps some, but never fixes it.

Sounds like it's time for a replacement hinge.

Interesting. I know the design but mine has no such detent. The spring is hooked on two tabs on the hinges and swings freely with no stoppage points in between. The hinge plate bottoms out against the bracket mounted inside the door jamb. There's a photo on the last few pages of my project thread. I'd post it here but I'm on my phone.

Here's a couple of pics of my setup. If you're talking about that pin sticking out of the side of the heavy part of the door hinge (circled in the last pic) mine didn't have any bushings on them. The pin just rolled over the check spring lever and they barely showed any wear so they must be pretty hard.

That's the pin. The lever rides on the pin because of the spring tension and the lever has ridges in it or humps, to put resistance on the assembly. You can see the bushing and pin is separate in my pic.

I hope I don't have to replace the hinge just to fix the pin and bushing:(

I see what you mean now. I didn't even realize there was a bushing on that pin. Live and learn. Sadly, the tech section doesn't have an exploded diagram of the door parts or we might could figure out a part number.
