Hood won't open on a 1972 F-100

Post by Bierisch »

Okay, so as the title says, I can not get my hood to open on my 1972 F-100. Can someone tell me the procedure to opening it? I tried to pull on the hood release latch thingy, and it was loose, so i pushed the hood down a bit and it got tight again so when I tried to pull the latch it just kinda stuck there. Is there an inside latch I haven't seen or am I just dealing with a locked up latch?

Thanks in advance for all of the help I may receive!

No inside cable, unless someone installed one. Then you'll have more problems. Pull lever or pull up on lever while lifting hood. The hood should pop up at least to the safety catch. If hood is not budging may need to get an additional body to help with lifting while pulling.
Have you had it opened recently? Did you do any work under hood? Was everything accounted for before closing the hood? (every time I say that I'm reminded of the scene in Tommy Boy") You might need to wiggle the hood while lifting up on hood release.

I probably just need more muscle, I am pretty weak, but I am manly enough to admit it. I also don't think it been opened since a year after 1992. Or some earlier year ending in 2. I will get my brother to help me tomorrow. See how it goes, thanks chicof!!

I used a screw driver placed strategically then rotated to pop the latch. Lub it after you get it opened.

If its been that long since its been opened its probably a combination of stuck latch and rusted hinges. See it you can get the plastic straw of a can of PB Blaster under the hood and spray the latching mechanism real good. Also get under her a stick your arm up real high and try to spray the hinges and the back side of the latch.

Good advise. Spray all you can. Do not try to open with a screw driver or pry bar. That should be last resort. Don't want to do any body damage.

I have to push my '67 hood down to undo the latch before it pops up and open (push hood down, then pull release towards me, then lift hood). It looks like it has two latch mechanisms, but I don't have a cable going inside ('sides, I have enough to do right now just keeping her on the road).

I ran into a '72 in the local junk yard, and for the life of me couldn't get the hood open, no matter how I pushed and pulled. But it also didn't have a latch release in the cab. Maybe I'll go back this weekend for another try.

Sometime giving it a karate chop in the front of the hood helps. The 79 always needs that to open. Try using a rubber hammer on the front of the hood as you pull the release lever. :D

Good luck.

When messing around with older rides, I always pull the release latch and give the hood a few good palm-smacks to see if it'll pop up for me. If not, them PB,WD-40, Liquid-Wrench, Deep-Creep, ect. on anything you can reach under/behind the hood, and let it soak in a bit.

So whatever happened?
I hate when a post is started with a problem that soon gathers many solutions, and the Original poster never responds back regarding solution.
We're all here to learn, many of us use the search feature so we don't have to keep asking the same question over and over. It never fails I start reading what I hope is a thread with my problem, only to find out the solution was never posted.
It's like reading a murder mystery novel, only to have the last chapter missing.
