Post by doesntknowmuch »

hi, i have a 1971 f-250 camper special i am taking it on as a project in hopes to have an amazing truck, currently it is factory yellow and im going to change it to metallic charcoal after i fiberglass up the surface holes but i ran into a bit of a problem, i was told that the trim just slides off but mine will only go about two inches ive messed with it several times and i dont want to pry it off as it is 1200$ to replace. im looking to find out if there is a certain tool i need to remove it or a special way? ithere is holes at the the bottom of the trim in the same spot as if i do need a speial tool plz help....

There are a fairly large variety of different molding clamps used throughout the trim set depending on the year model, location and style of trim package. Several are held on with nuts/screws and the majority are the "slide on" type held on with rivets through the sheet metal. Here's some decent diagrams for the style and location of the clamps http://www.lmctruck.com/icatalog/fb/full.aspx?Page=64 pages 64-67. You have to remove all the nuts and screws first. Some of the clamps "twist" like a cam as the moulding slides on so those will have to twisted horizontal before removing the molding from them. Typically there's a wire coming off at an angle that I think is what spins the clamp as the slides across it. This can get hung up in the lip of the moulding and make it stubborn as well as rust/corrosion can make them "sticky". Don't be overly concerned about damaging the clamps as they are available aftermarket. The plastic/riveted one's are where the moulding just slides off. Also be aware of which end is "capped" and which end is open as this will determine whether it slides forward or backward to remove. Search the Parts for Sale/Trade section for moulding and you'll find pics of the back side of the pieces that will assist you in figuring when to slide and a when to lift the trim off of a clamp.
