Finally getting my dream truck! Towing questions.

Post by guhfluh »

Hi guys and gals, after lurking here for years, even after registering, Ive finally found my truck and am in the process of getting it. I need to be able to safely tow it home though.

Its a 1967 F250 2wd Crew that is completely stock. What I'm having a hard time finding out is the front track width, or the measurement between the outside of the front tires. The wheelbase being 149' is too long for your average U-Haul car trailer, but I would like to see if it will fit on your average tow dolly. I believe they list the maximum width for a U-Haul dolly as 70-72". What I see in the Fordification literature for a 1967 F100 is a track width of roughly 60", but no mention of F250, wheel width(I am assuming 6"?), backspacing, or tire width.

It seems like it would be very close, but it may work. If anyone here has any help, I'd appreciate it! Thanks!

Welcome aboard from Tehama County Calif. I have only used one from U-Haul to tow a Escort. I do not believe the truck will fit. Post the ? in the general topic section and some one who has done it will chime in.

Congratulations and welcome. Where do you have to go to get the truck? I too waited for a long time and ended up with 2 1967 crew cabs. I don't think the track is wider unless it has widened wheels on it. I miss getting a Lunar Green 67 from California.

Thanks guys!

The truck is in SD and the plan is to leave tomorrow and pick it up on Monday. It could be driven back, but Id rather save on fuel and only have one truck to fill rather than two, be able to swap drivers, have company, etc.

I didn't think the F250 track was wider than the F100, but I wanted to make sure and ask just in case. I think the tires might be just a hair wider on the 250, but the rims I have no idea. If Id have to guess, they should be the same or very close to the F100, but I could be way off. I have a friend with a stock F100 in town, I plan to go measure today and see what I come up with.

Hi, thanks! I'll definitely take pics. I plan on having it as a family vehicle and semi-daily driver. It will stay stock for the most part, with maybe a power disc upgrade and P/S , but the addition of A/C will be first thing done, as A/C is a must for the summers here . I like the clean stock look, with no holes cut for speakers, radio, etc., so it'll stay stock looking and clean.

Unfortunately, it looks like the U-Haul dolly is going to be a too close for comfort fit, but I have found a full size car trailer for about the same price that I feel much more comfortable with. I measured right around 72" from the outside of one tire to the outside of the other tire on a '70 F100, so the tires should barely fit. I measured 83" from fender to fender on the dolly though, and supposed to have 6" of clearance for the dolly not to hit the doors or fenders on the truck. I believe the truck width is too much for that, and Id feel much more comfortable with a trailer designed for it.

The stock width is the same as any other 1967 F250. Stock trucks, 1967 and before, were sent a custom shop for modification. After 1967, the truck were sent to Canada for modification.

I went ahead and picked up a car trailer(with brakes). I just didn't feel comfortable with the U-Hauls. The dolly might have worked but was too close for comfort, and the U-Haul trailer was wide enough and probably would have worked, but was too short for comfort. The trailer I got didn't cost any more than the U-Haul, and I'll spend more in fuel hauling it up there empty, but I feel much more comfortable with a trailer that will handle it easily.
