New to Forum

Post by Clunker »

New to the forum. Tomorrow I'm going to pick up my new project - a 1970 F250 Camper Special. Just wanted to get everyone's input. The current owner doesn't really know very much about it even though he bought it from the original owner. He thought it had a 352, which I think is impossible if it is really a 1970. He probably saw 352 on the block casting and assumed ... Anyway, I was delighted to see that there is a forum dedicated to these beautiful trucks.

The floorboards are rusted out with daylight showing through the passenger side, but the rest of the body is nearly rust-free, and he already has aftermarket floorboards ready to install. The body is very straight with only a few dings. The aftermarket paint isn't that great, with several areas peeling or chipping. Mileage is unknown because the previous owner changed out part of the stock dash with more modern gauges, including a new speedometer/odometer, but it runs smooth, sounds great, and doesn't seem to burn any oil. Front chrome bumper is perfect, and other trim is complete and totally straight. Do you guys think it was worth picking up for $900?

Oh yeah! Pics.

Obviously, since I'm picking up the truck tomorrow, I don't currently have it in my possession. So the only pic I have is from the CL ad (which I have).

Considering that I build my own computers from scratch, it's a little embarrassing to admit that I'm not sure how to attach a photo. Can I just upload it from my hard drive, or do I need to store it in photobucket and post the link?

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome. I just got home with the truck and have already learned some interesting things. First, I looked at the door tag and it says that certified HP is 170. If I'm not mistaken, The only engine that came stock in the 1970 F250 with 170HP was the 300 I6. However, the engine is definitely a V8. Is there any way to tell from the VIN what engine came stock?

The truck felt underpowered on the hour-long drive home, but I haven't had a chance to even check the air filter or anything else yet. I also think that I heard a vacuum leak at higher RPM's, so it may be something as simple as the vacuum advance not being able to do its job. Anyway, as soon as I have time to do a little poking around, I'll post the technical questions in the appropriate forum.

Pics coming as soon as I get some daylight.

Update:

I found the tech articles in this forum (very helpful) and decoded the VIN. Apparently I have the 360, probably a C6 tranny, and the 3.73 rear end. My suspicions about the air filter were correct. I imagine the poor engine was trying to run with an air supply equivalent to sucking through a straw. I'm amazed it even ran. Part of the problem is that the valve cover gaskets are leaking a little and some of the oil migrated into the filter, providing a nice sticky surface for dust to collect. I even found some leaves in there. Bought a new filter today, but I need to get the gaskets replaced asap, so it doesn't happen again.

I still can't post pics because it's raining/snowing today, and my cell phone/camera was getting pretty wet. So far, no regrets.
