Filling the body seams on the bedsides/hood

Post by Broncobilly66 »

I'd really like to fill the seams on the bed sides and the front of the hood. Mine, like most, are a bit crusty. I was thinking about cleaning the seams and POR-15ing them and Bondoing them smooth. Is this an acceptable way to do this? Or do they need to be welded and finish ground??

Bondo will crack, I would weld them first.

I've seen it done with bondo. They simply punched the holes in to make them concave a bit, then filled them in with bondo.

I don't think he is talking about the holes left by removing chrome strips, he is wanting to fill the bed seems an inch or so above the bumps (that give our trucks their name) and the seam across the front of the hood. If he fills them with bondo, without welding them, as the body expands and contracts with hot and cold temperatures and the seams flex, caused by normal movement of the body, the bondo will crack.

I took a wire wheel and cleaned the area then took a thin cut off disc on my grinder and cleaned to rest of the area in the groove then fully welded the seams

I would leave the bumps alone.

I would however weld and grind the hood seam... I think the line distracts from the overall appearance of the front end.
