Barn find 72 F 100

Post by grdev »

I just bought a 72 F100 with a blown engine for my granddaughter. Always been a GM guy, so know very little about Fords. The project came with a 460 replacement engine, it has a blown 360 still in truck with an auto tranny. I would like to install a 302 I think, but don't know where to start, so any advise would be helpful. I'm in south central WI

:wel: from Chicago area. Check options for engine choice. There are easy $ options. The 360/390 's are available used and would have it running quick.

Thanks for all the welcomes. Entertaining all offers for 460 engine and 360. From what I understand the 360 just stopped running. I will do a compression check on it. Located between Chicago and Milwaukee. Not sure just what direction to take. :hmm:

remember the 360 can be made into a 390 fairly easily. The rebuild kits for the 360 are cheap at napa. you might wanna keep it, unless like me you have an extra 302 laying around. Remember 302 is a smallblock, mounts are different I think

I should try to get the 360 running. The distributor has been removed, but other than that it all seems to be together. Can I expect at least 15 MPG with the 360 and a 3.50 rear end? I had a new 72 F100 I bought from a family friends uncle that had been in a minor accident. He did not have insurance and was to advised to sell it before he went to trial and I bought it. I didn't keep it long as I had a 3/4 ton chevy I used to haul wood with and liked it much better than the Ford, so I sold it. It had a 302 with a three speed on the column. I didn't care for it because it couldn't haul as much wood and was geared way to high for off roading in the woods. Who knew I would ever have a granddaughter that loves old Ford pickups?

My last Ford pickup was an 86 F150 300 straight 6 with a four speed stick. It averaged around 12 MPG on the HWY and had very little power. I even had a new Jasper engine installed and there was no difference. I think I'm just going to have come to grips my granddaughters truck won't be much better on mileage.
