hello from SC

Post by magpede »

Hey guys just wanted to give a quick hello. I just recently picked up a 1971 and 1972 f350 (had to buy both or no deal) and hopefully will have one back roadworthy here shortly. I've been wanting me a 70's model ford truck for a good while now and the price was definitely right on these. I'm trying to find some info regarding towing capacity for both of em but am coming up empty. if anyone could point me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Mr Magpede, Welcome to the best site period.
Pull up a chair and stay awhile.
Hope you enjoy it here. :fr:

Can't help you on the towing but I'm sure others
will shortly.
Good luck.

Welcome to the site!

Try posting up some questions in the specific forums concerning the actual engine .....trans....differential.....and suspension for each vehicle. Quite a few DRW fans on here.

Thanks for the advice. Trying to decide if my question should go in suspension or drivetrain...

magpede,
:wel: from choo-choo town to the wicked/left-handed/odd balled/red-headed stepchild world of 70's DRW Ford truck owners!
I think there were maybe three of us left in the world at my last count! Naw...there's probably about 20-30 of us here now with the old duallys. My poor old dually was used to haul cars down to Florida, (from Tennessee) the last 10 years before I got it-one on the then 8' X 12' flat bed and the second on a trailer.
You'll probably want to start here by finding your vin(s):
http://www.fordification.com/tech/vin_find.htm
And then maybe go here to decode your vin(s):

This should help you get started.

Many Ford bumps / one 76' EB / and several dents through the years.
A lot of "oddball" Ford parts collected from working on them for 34 years now!

I located and decoded my vin as best I could with those....the door tag on the 71 isn't correct so I can't look up much on it. The 72 is a 159" wb cab and chassis model with a 360, np435, 4.10 gearing and 10,000lb gvwr. The 71 should have been a pickup, but it's got a dump bed and dually axle now. The guy I got em from said it has a chevy rear end but idk about all that...looks like a dana 70B...tag is gone however so idk what gearing.

I forgot to mention...reason rear end was changed in the 71 was for higher gearing/better mileage...also the 360 in it has been swapped out for a 390. I'm going buy the number stamped on the frame.

Not sure about the actual specs but, if my F100/302/3.03 is any indication, I'd say if you can throw a chain around a decent sized mountain, it'll pull it across the country without breaking a sweat.
