Post by grabbitwilson »

Took motor out of a 79 ford. It ran fine in that truck. Put it in a 72 ford and cant seem to get it to start. It turns over all day but wont crank any suggestion

:wel: from choo-choo town. Do you have a voltage meter? What is on the truck for ignition, (the original points)? Have you tried pulling, (and grounding) a spark plug to see if you have spark? Have you verified if there is gas flowing from the carb? And what engine is in your truck?

The motor is a 302 and it has electronic ignition from the 79 truck I also changed both boxes to the 72 truck and checked the wiring harness three times to make sure it was right

Here's a good wiring diagram for the Duraspark ignition the 79' would've had:
http://www.fordification.com/forum/view ... =8&t=48178
I'd start by checking to see if you're getting power, (8-12 DC volts) to the + side of the coil when the ignition is switched on. And pull a spark plug and ground it against the block to see if it's firing. You should have a nice bluish/reddish spark when turning the engine over-and grounding the plug against the engine block. Duraspark is also very easy to short out, (box wise). But the beauty of it is that it is also fairly cheap to replace:

And you might want to start another thread on your engine issue over here, (rather than in the "Welcome" board:

Back to my question above...do you have a voltage meter? If so, what are you reading on the 12V "+" side of the coil with the ignition switch turned on?

Personally, i'd start backtracking the circuit from the coil backwards. Do you have power at the other end of the connection, etc.
