Hello - new guy with his first old Ford

Post by just_james »

Hello! I'm pretty excited, I just picked up my first older vehicle. I've had a couple other Fords before, but the oldest was from '89 and all of them had modern things like fuel-injection, disc brakes, a/c and the like. So here it is, a 1970 F100. Originally an inline 6, 3 speed manual truck, it's been swapped to a 302 and a C4. It drives pretty nice, the brakes take a bit of legwork, but I've been cruising around yesterday and put quite a few miles on it. The paint isn't original, but it looks good enough that my wife thinks the truck is cool. Doesn't seem to be much rust in it, but there is a spot in the door and in one of the fenders. The cab corners and mounts look solid.

Short term plans are picking up some seatbelts, trim pieces, and monitoring the wet spots to see if they need more attention. I'll need to go through the carb at some point as there is a little stumble off idle. The gauges aren't too accurate either. I also need a tailgate at some point. Longterm plans, I have no idea as I enjoy the truck as it is.

Good day James,

For seat belts, this thread might interest you: May I ask for advice on Beam's 140" WSCH300 seat belts?

Your flareside bed looks excellent!

Thanks for the welcome everyone.

Robroy, thanks for the link. I was just coming back to this forum to ask about seat belt options and about retrofitting 3-point belts into the older trucks. Seems like they were an option up until '72 or so.

Off to go learn about points, tv cables, and other things from 40 years ago :)

You're welcome James! And indeed, they seem to have been a rarely selected option on our trucks.

That particular seat belt company will mail you belt material samples for just a few dollars each, so you can see how they'll look in your interior. I was looking at some oddball colors so I took them up on that. :)
