power steering problems

Post by fattyford »

I have a 1970 ford truck with new power steering pump & hoses.Everything is hooked up right, but when I turn the steering wheel it turns about six inches then locks I take off the tension and it turns about six inches and does the same until turn is completed.

:wel: from choo-choo town. Sounds to me like it's in the steering box, (even rebuilt ones can have issues) is there a warranty on it? But I'd also try to "burp" the system first. Do this by jacking the front off the ground-and go from lock to lock a few times to make sure it's not air in the hydraulics causing issues.

Welcome to the world of Bump fun from SoCal. Sounds like a hydraulic lock up. If you have enough hose, remove the return line to the pump put a bucket under it to catch to fluid and put extra hose on the pump that can rise above the pump (a second had is always helpful. Have PS fluid and a funnel at the pump. Start the motor. With a second hand adding fluid to the pump, quickly check the steering. If it works, and you have good flow on your return, the pump is defective. If you have little or no flow on the return line the steering gear may be plugged. I've used air to back flush the steering gear. Repeat the the procedure. Good luck
