I made it out of an original ford bumpside tailgate
My plans include a flip-down mechanism for hidden hitch, probably using a set of tailgate hinges.
For now I just tack welded it , i think it will look nice when finished.
this is BEFORE
these are AFTER almost;)

That was an AWESOME idea!! Hope you don't mind if others borrow that idea from you. My buddy was going to buy a roll pan for his 67, but we have an extra tailgate sitting here and guess what its going to be used for now! Thanks for sharing!!
The tailgate we have as an extra has some damage to the lower half, but the top is in great shape which is what we would use for this. Because the tailgate has damage is the reason that it is an "extra" and is just lying around. That being said, I cannot tell you how many good tailgates I have seen at the local Pick-a-part yards here in SoCal that end up just being crushed... Its a shame. A lot are straight and all are virtually rust free.
The one that was cut in the photos above does appear to have been pretty good though. Actually, it appears as if it was better than the tailgate that is on the truck now. What is with that rotting hole in the lower right side of the tailgate you kept? It appears as the tailgate on the truck would have been better cut-up... But hey, Im just looking at a photo.
- still got my first first car 20+yrs later : 69 f100 sorta kinda pretending its a Mercury M100 w/a 70 f350 sport custom cab (factory buckets) 67 grille with 69 ranger cooneyes 68 merc box and hood, some supercool fiberglass fenders i scored way back when, 76 f150 disc brake frontend..currently running a 90 5.0HO 4bbl/c4 auto & 3.50 posi...originally a 360/c6 f100 Ranger with dealer added towpack (incl. kelsey hays trailer brake),boxside toolbox, behind the seat stowage & belly tank...only original parts left on 'er are the frame, rear end, rear springs, and rear bumper...

besides that little cancer patch and a couple dings at the top, the current tailgate is pretty much fair condition. I'm trying to find a pristine take out tailgate to replace it with, but if i don't I'd have to settle for something like this http://www.ebay.com/itm/Ford-Pickup-Tru ... eb&vxp=mtr
I am mixed on the pan. I really like the bump from the tailgate. Just me personally here I think it should be moved upward towards the tailgate. This would leave room to cut a plate recess into the pan plus close up that gap under the gate. What are your plans for your plate? When I get a good tailgate I may cut mine up & do this with it.
