a friend gave my wife some small tea cup size chinaware, 4 pcs. total. The china was in a food lion bag when it gave to us. It stayed in that bag for months and since my wife was doing nothing with the china, she gave it to her sister. Her sister had it placed on the countertop still in the bag when a friend of her's walked in and noticed the china in the bag. The friend started looking at it and and right off the top she offered 300.00 for the four pcs. of china. Come to find out later the china was Occupied Japan.

Re: $3 painting sells for $190,000 at auction
My story and I'm stickin' to it-but really true.
I'd gotten an old wind up "bird in a brass cage" ornamental thing. It would chirp when you winded it up and the bird, (about 1" tall) would twirl around in his cage, (about 10" overall tall). I had it for many years, (got it from an "employee auction") at a monthly employee of the month.
Years later I'd lost interest-and the dogs and cats weren't amused by it anymore-so I decided to list it on evilboy.
Started the auction at $20, It sold for over $220.00!
Turns out is was a hand made / back in the 50's rare chirping bird cage!
It was also one of those time when food was scarce-out of work.

Re: $3 painting sells for $190,000 at auction
I bought a 1964 Honda EY40 generator. Tiny little thing, smaller than the old school metal lunchboxes. Had the owner's manual, toolkit, ran like a champ. Produced a whopping 40 watts, super quiet. Turns out this gen. was a promotional item for display at Honda dealers, and also sold with the new Sony transistor TV. For the camping crowd I guess.
Ended up selling my $60. generator for $365. to a collector in Japan.

I bought this from a guy who bought it from a guy who bought it from the local dealer here in San Antonio for about $200.
I sold it to a gentleman from Galveston who intended to restore it or at least make it run and drive. Maybe for his wife to drive. Oh he paid $1500 and was very happy with it. It had no batteries but was otherwise intact and came with tons of documentation from the original dealer.

Re: $3 painting sells for $190,000 at auction
I own a painting by Joan Savo (http://www.askart.com/askart/s/joan_savo/joan_savo.aspx) that I bought at an estate sale for $25. I live in a mid century modern house and this is an abstract from her Ballerinas series that I thought would fit well with my 50's furniture. Unfortunately it is worth too much to keep! Hey, at least it is paying for a new roof (almost, I have over 100 square of custom roof to do! LOL). Joan Savo is considered America's foremost female abstract artist and her works hang in many museums like the MOMA. Hawkrod

Mr Hawkrod, that must have brought a "pretty penny".
Congratulations.
