Western MD F250

Post by Kenny Chestnuts »

Hello from western Maryland. I acquired my 1971 f250 2wd with 95,000 miles a bit over a year ago. The truck was cosmetically restored shortly before I got it with and emerald green and black paint scheme, indoor/outdoor carpet, dark tinted windows and skull door lock knobs. As far as I can tell the truck has the stock 300 6cyl, t18, and a 4.54 rear end. There is certainly rust hiding underneath and the fenders and hood don't fit together as good as they could. I believe the radiator support was replaced with a 73-79 version. The engine sounded fine when I got the truck but after the first winter of sitting it began to knock which I have been told is possibly a wrist pin, really not sure. Hoping possibly it could only be a water pump or alternator making the noise. The tranny has always been difficult to find 3rd and 4th gears, I replaced the shift cane with one with a bit less distortion in the pin/slot at the base. This has helped a bit but it is still difficult to shift. My first truck was an 85 f150 2wd with 300 6cyl and np435 (great truck which cheaply and reliably took me all over the country) but it rusted away and I junked it before I acquired this truck (wish I'd kept the tranny and engine now). At a junkyard a few years ago I came miraculously came across a Clifford intake and long tube headers. I've since sandblasted the headers and bought and Edelbrock 500cfm 4bbl and Clifford adapter plate. I also was given a 1972 f250 Camper Special 2wd that had a 360 and c6. This truck was rusted out and I dismantled it taking absolutely everything but the engine and tranny to the scrap yard. I hope to take the front disc setup, power steering, and auxillary fuel tank and install onto the 1971, possibly also the extra wide mirrors. I'd like to make this truck into a reliable driver with the more modern features such as power steering, disc brakes, fuel tank out of the cab, dodge 3 point seat belts, and possibly add ZF 5 speed tranny. I really like the simplicity, styling and heavy duty nature of this truck. I need to determine which ZF tranny I should look for but will start a new thread with this question. This website seems to be an excellent source of good info.
